The Toccoa House Properties Difference

As a wedding venue in Blue Ridge for couples in Cary, NC, Toccoa House Properties is simply magical, where the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains meets the country-chic vibes of modern Appalachia. It has a distinctly custom-built feel, and for good reason. Nearly every inch of the property - from the luxurious cabins within walking distance of one another to the heated pool and more - was purpose-built for exceptional events, like weddings in Blue Ridge.

It all started when Oregonian Greg Spencer initially discovered the Blue Ridge area on a backpacking trip to the Cohutta Wilderness in the 1980s. A short time later, enamored of the area, Greg embarked on a land-purchasing mission that led him to 17 acres of undeveloped acreage. Amazed by the beauty of the Toccoa River and the inspiring views of the surrounding mountains, Greg wasted no time in securing what is now known as Toccoa House Properties.

Today, Toccoa House Properties exists as a one-of-a-kind, highly sought-after event space and wedding venue. As a family-owned and operated business, we take pride in putting on fairytale weddings for you and your guests. In fact, our unique location and commitment to personalized wedding services are what separate us from other wedding venues in North Georgia.

Simply put, we aren't afraid to go "above and beyond" for wedding clients. If you need assistance or advice, you can rest easy knowing that our team will answer your calls - not an automated answering machine or third-party service.

Some popular styles to consider may include:

  • Traditional
  • Whimsical

Pick a Wedding Date and List of Wedding Venue Choices

What time of the year do you want to get married? Once you have an idea of a season, like fall or spring, come up with a list of potential of wedding venues in Blue Ridge, GA, like Toccoa House Properties.

Keep in mind the following:

  • Guest Count
  • Wedding Budget
  • Wedding Style

step-three

Schedule a Tour

One of the most important steps involved in choosing a wedding venue is to tour the space. Don't be afraid to ask pertinent questions. If the venue manager seems like they have better things to do than answer your questions, look elsewhere.

Make sure you take into account:

  • Size of Wedding Venue
  • Ambiance of Wedding Venue
  • Layout of Wedding Venue

step-four

Consider Services and Amenities

Once you narrow down your wedding venue choices, consider the amenities and services the venue offers. Be sure to weigh what they offer against your needs and budget to further narrow down your choices.

Consider services and amenities such as:

  • Lodging
  • Ceremony and Reception Space
  • Seating
  • Day-Of Coordinator

step-five

Determine the Location of Your Wedding Venue

If you think your guests will hate a particular wedding venue location, why consider it in the first place? Choosing a destination - like Toccoa House Properties - that is within a short driving distance of grocery stores and restaurants is almost always better than a hard-to-access venue.

step-six

Check Out Wedding Venue Reviews

Do yourself a favor and check out the wedding venue's Google reviews and reviews on other platforms. You can also ask for opinions from people you trust, like friends and family members. Don't be afraid to reach out directly to people who have used the wedding venue previously. A wedding venue in Blue Ridge for couples in Cary, NC, should be excited to show you their online reviews. If you notice a disparaging review, try asking the owner of the wedding venue to explain their side of the story before writing them off completely.

step-seven

Compare Wedding Venues and Choose

Try coming up with a list of pros and cons of each wedding venue that you're considering. Doing so can help you whittle your list down to one or two choices. Remember to trust your gut throughout this process. If you've come down to two choices, and something about one of the venues rubbed you the wrong way, it's probably for a reason.

Features to consider when choosing your wedding venue may include:

  • Location
  • Amenities
  • Price
  • Reviews
  • Tour
  • Lodging
  • Accessibility
  • Attractiveness of Wedding Venue
 Wedding Packages Cary, NC

Confirm and Plan

Once you've settled on a wedding venue, it's time to book! As most wedding venues will tell you, try booking your venue at least a year before your wedding is set to take place. Doing so will give you plenty of time to plan. If you need help preparing, don't be afraid to work with a professional wedding planner to make your life easier.

Some items to plan for may include:

  • DJs or Entertainment
  • Caterers
  • Decorations
  • Attractions
  • Bridal Showers
  • Bachelor Parties
  • Post-Wedding Parties

The restaurant inside the Umstead Hotel and Spa is a Forbes five-star restaurant for a reason. This is a special occasion spot for dinner, a four-course prix fixe menu, with an epic wine list (ask the on-site sommelier questions and learn more). The menu takes inspiration from North Carolina, even growing fruits and vegetables at its nearby farm. Each dish is plated with artistic presentation. Other can’t-miss Heron’s experiences: Breakfast outside with a view of the grounds or cocktails in the lounge.

Don’t let the name fool you. This downtown Cary spot serves fresh North Carolina-sourced seafood and seasonal small plates in a dimly lit, bohemian-decorated atmosphere. Don’t miss the gluten-free fried chicken or the bottled dirty martini with house-made brine and blue cheese stuffed olives.

A constant in the heart of downtown Cary’s rapidly growing dining scene, Taipei 101 serves Taiwanese, Sichuan, and Zhejiang fare in a casual atmosphere. The Chinese restaurant is a Cary mainstay, known for its generous portion sizes, scallion beef pancake roll, and soup dumplings.

Master baker Lionel Vatinet’s La Farm is everywhere, including the Raleigh–Durham International Airport and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. But the cafe in Preston Corners offers more than just the delicious, yet ubiquitous, baked goods in a warm cafe setting. The quiche Lorraine is complemented by the house Counter Culture drip coffee or full espresso bar for breakfast. For lunch, sandwiches are served on fresh La Farm bread – the Southwest turkey on ciabatta is a delicious pick.

The restaurant inside the Mayton transformed a few years ago when local developers joined forces to save the boutique hotel from bankruptcy. The investment resulted in a restaurant that would draw diners on its own, but it happens to be adjacent to the new downtown Cary Park, with a covered patio serving the views. The renovation included overhauling the aesthetics, like adding colorful custom wallpaper that ties back to the park. It’s a solid all-day dining option for Southern-inspired favorites like fried green tomatoes and peel-and-eat shrimp with a dynamic modern American menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus a weekend brunch (don’t miss the indulgent smoked salmon scrambled eggs with brie in a pastry shell).

An experimental restaurant from chef Michael Lee’s M Restaurants is situated next to M Sushi in Fenton. The tapas-style menu is served as dishes are ready in a modern, industrial sit-down restaurant setting with a large bar and small outdoor patio available. The Pan-Asian offerings are constantly changing, with fresh takes such as Brussels sprouts with miso tahini sauce, yuzu citrus juice, and a Japanese spice blend or a lobster shumai with shrimp and lobster mousse and dumpling skin served in a citrus beurre blanc sauce.

Dining is an experience at Top Chef alum Katsuji Tanabe’s Mexico City-inspired restaurant with LM Restaurants. Performances include a tequila cocktail on fire or a spray bottle of orange juice for a mimosa. Follow up your cocktail with Tanabe’s grandmother’s cornbread recipe, topped with honey truffle butter, and don’t miss the octopus and chorizo tacos.

Tucked in a brick strip mall is a gem of a seafood restaurant, Try Seafood. Belly up to the fishing boat-themed cash register and order fried shrimp or fish, blackened catfish with veggies, or one of the fried combos for a variety. And don’t skip on the perfectly fried hushpuppies. Regina and Harold Scott’s Try Seafood food truck is still around town, too, but don’t miss the brick-and-mortar experience. The Black- and woman-owned restaurant’s nautical motif and sizzling sound of the next order hitting the hot oil will transport customers to the seafood joints on the coast.

If you’re at all familiar with the state of North Carolina, then you’ve likely heard of the Research Triangle, a colloquial name that refers to the region bound by three cities (all within roughly 35 miles of each other) that are each home to a major research university. There’s North Carolina State University in Raleigh, Duke in Durham, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill. Partly because of the vibrant student and faculty populations—plus the bright alumni who stick around after graduation—these cities have become major cultural hubs for everything from art to music to dining, and they’re continuing to grow each year.

As folks flock to the area, some of that energy has spilled over into neighboring communities, and over the past few years, Cary (once a small suburb of Raleigh) has blossomed into a coveted destination in its own right. Home to dozens of wonderful local restaurants, great shopping, unique stays, and a thriving art and culture scene, Cary is making the case that there has never been a better time to do a little further digging into the state’s famed Research Triangle.

Embrace the Thriving Arts & Culture Scene

This outdoor music venue has welcomed the likes of artists like Chris Stapleton, John Mayer, Darius Rucker, and the Alabama Shakes. Its location surrounded by majestic pine trees alongside Symphony Lake gives every show there that little special something. Visit from November to January to see the famed North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival, where the grounds of the venue are transformed into a glowing wonderland of larger-than-life silk sculpture lanterns.

The Cary Arts Center has had a long history, starting with its former life as a high school created by the town’s founder in the 1870s. Today the multipurpose complex not only holds a 431-seat theater for local theater performances, but it also hosts gallery exhibitions, studio programs, art classes and camps, and concerts.

The former Page-Walker Hotel, a building in the French Second Empire style on the National Register of Historic Places, is a hub for the community. Not only does it house the Cary Heritage Museum on its third floor, where you can take a self-guided tour to learn all about the history of the town, but it also features two outdoor gardens.

Located in the heart of downtown, The Cary Theater was once home to the town’s first indoor movie theater. Since opening in 1946, it’s also been a clothing store, a recording studio, and an auto parts store. Today, it’s returned to its roots as a 175-seat art house theater with a packed calendar of independent film screenings, local film festivals, live music, classic cinema screenings, and comedy performances.

There’s always something special happening in Cary, so time your trip around one of the city’s many festivals. Late April brings the Spring Daze Arts & Craft Festival, where more than 170 local artists come together for a giant market, plus food, drinks, and interactive arts experiences. August brings a larger version of Spring Daze in the form of Lazy Daze, which includes the works of 300 artists from 16 states. Other major events include celebrations for Diwali and Kwanzaa in October and December, respectively, as well as the North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival.

Pick Your Home Away From Home

Set near a pond on beautifully wooded grounds, the Umstead Hotel & Spa is the ideal spot to come home to after a full day exploring the city. Its tranquil setting is accentuated by luxury suites and rooms with gorgeous views of the surrounding forests, a world-class spa complete with outdoor soaking tubs, and excellent dining options. Watch chefs expertly prepare your dinner at Herons, or make a reservation for afternoon tea featuring a live harpist in the lounge.

If you want to stay in the center of the action, reserve a room at The Mayton boutique hotel. The Georgian-style hotel is situated in the center of downtown, so you can visit restaurants, breweries, and shops, then walk home when you’re ready to hit the hay. The inn is beautifully appointed and also features on-site restaurant Peck & Plume.

Eat Delicious Food

Ask anyone where to eat in Cary, and nine times out of 10, they’ll direct you to La Farm Bakery. The European-style café and bakery, owned by Master Baker Lionel Vatinet and his wife Missy, has led the food scene in Cary for almost 25 years. The modern bakery and café (with three locations) utilizes centuries-old baking techniques for the perfect blend of old and new. Grab a fresh fruit tart, cinnamon bun, or almond croissant from the bakery, or sit down for a meal in their café’s expansive courtyard that is often filled for weekend brunch. The Quiche Lorraine or Croque Madam both give the perfect French boulangerie experience.

Asheville is famous for its craft beer scene, but it’s not the only North Carolina city that cranks out great brews. If you’ve got a hankering for a cold IPA or fruity sour, head to Bond Brothers Beer Co. or Fortnight Brewing Company. Order a flight and rank your favorites.

When supper time rolls around, head to neighborhood restaurant Hank’s Downtown Dive where you can expect creative, flavorful, chef-driven eats and a well-stocked bar. The menu changes seasonally, but expect fresh small plates like mango salad with avocado, muscadine, chili crisp, and peanuts or shishito peppers with trout roe, sorghum vinaigrette, and hazelnut. The gluten-free fried chicken with ancho chili-garlic-honey glaze is also a standout.

Give your day a sunny start by treating yourself to a bagel from Big Dom’s. The popular breakfast spot makes Montreal-style bagels, which means they’re similar to a classic New York-style boiled bagels, only crisper and with a slightly sweet bite thanks to being poached in brown sugar water. Order a stacked-high breakfast sandwich, and grab a specialty cake B’donut for good measure.

The super-premium, small-batch ice cream at Andia’s is 100 percent something to write home about. The Xouris family’s ice cream shops (two in Cary and a third in Raleigh) are doing something truly special with ultra-creamy ice cream in a multitude of creative flavors. Their signature baklava flavor features giant chunks of the traditional Greek dessert. Other standouts include ube, peanut butter fudge, and rose pistachio. Each month, the shops rolls out six limited-time seasonal flavors, so there’s always something new to obsess over.

Explore More of the City

If you’ve got sports fans on your trip, or maybe you just want to spend your day like a local, head to WakeMed Soccer Park to catch North Carolina FC or NC Courage in action. Both the men's USL and women's NWSL teams play from March through October, so there are plenty of opportunities to root for the (home away from) home team.

New things are popping up in Cary every day, and one of the latest is Fenton, a mixed-use development that’s a one-stop shop for everything from dining and drinking to entertainment and shopping. Expect live music programming in the summer and an ice-skating rink in the winter. Year-round options include a rooftop bar, movie theater, bull-riding bar, and a sports bar stocked with ping pong tables, air hockey, skeeball, and a golf simulator.

Speaking of new attractions, the long-awaited Downtown Cary Park is set to officially open with a big party in mid-November. The 7-acre park, which has been in the works for more than two decades, features several public art installations, Academy Pavilion (where you’ll find a market, restrooms, and an event space), a dog park, a performance pavilion, a botanical garden, a giant playground and splashpad, and a striking elevated walkway that sits at eye-level with the tree canopy.

Prepare Your Pack For Outdoor Adventure

Find three miles of family friendly nature trails at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve. In addition to seeing the namesake Eastern Hemlock trees, this is also a great place to spot birds and other wildlife, as well as take in scenic views from several overlook points. Don’t forget to stop into the Stevens Nature Center to get some background on the Piedmont region through exhibits focused on both its history and natural environment.

One of Cary’s most frequented gathering places, Bond Park offers so much to do that you could easily while away an afternoon—or much longer—there. Take a leisurely stroll around Bond Lake, or head to the boathouse to rent a kayak, canoe, or pedal boat. Inside, you’ll also find refreshments, cane poles, and bait so you can set up for a day of fishing. Other park amenities include a ropes course, playground, amphitheater, baseball fields, and several trails.

How To Save Money on Home Insurance in North Carolina

There are several ways to save money on home insurance in North Carolina, such as qualifying for discounts, comparing rates, maintaining a good credit score and adjusting your deductible.

You can see if you qualify for the following discounts, which most insurance providers offer.

Your deductible is the amount you pay before your insurance coverage kicks in. You will pay lower premiums if you choose a policy with a higher deductible. However, doing so will increase your out-of-pocket expenses if you file a claim. It’s important to assess your current situation and select a deductible within your budget in case of a claim.

We recommend you compare quotes from several insurers before making a final decision — doing so can help you explore your available coverage options. It can also result in significant savings since every insurer will evaluate your application differently and give you a quote based on individual criteria.

Your credit history is an essential factor in determining home insurance rates, as it helps an insurer analyze the likelihood of you filing a claim. Insurance companies usually charge individuals with lower credit scores higher rates and vice versa. However, you can build your credit history to improve your score and potentially receive a better home insurance rate.

Tips for Insuring a Coastal Home

Living on the coast exposes homeowners to natural beauty, but also the potential for natural disasters. Coastal homes, or homes near the coast or major bodies of water, are subjected to more risk from hurricanes, named storms, flooding, erosion and other natural disasters than inland homes. This heightened risk means coastal homes are more expensive to insure and can require certain additional coverage.

Coastal insurance is home insurance for coastal properties. It is pricier, more comprehensive, and less common than traditional home insurance. It is specially designed to protect you from the severe weather risks faced by living in a coastal home. You may also need two other insurance policies, flood insurance and windstorm insurance, to ensure the full protection of your coastal home.

Coastal insurance coverage differs from traditional home insurance in a few ways, including the way in which an insurance company reimburses you for damage. Learn more about the differences in the chart below:

Finding coastal home insurance may be difficult. Traditional home insurance providers tend not to offer coastal home insurance. To find a policy that suits your needs, consider the following:

Hurricane and Flood Insurance Coverage in North Carolina

Although flood insurance is typically not included in standard home insurance policies, damage from hurricanes, windstorms and hailstorms usually falls under a separate deductible. This means if your house or property is damaged after a hurricane, you can file a claim and pay the associated deductible rather than the standard all-peril deductible on your policy. You can expect to choose a wind and hail deductible amount between 2% and 6% of the total dwelling coverage limit on the policy.

Coverage for flood-related damages may be offered as an add-on for your policy. Flood insurance endorsements sold through your provider are likely written by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which is an organization managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Not only does the NFIP offer comprehensive coverage to policyholders who live in flood zones and anywhere in the state, but the program also has a website that includes valuable resources and information to keep North Carolina residents educated and aware.

However, according to the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI), NFIP policies are not offered in every area. After a study in June 2020, the department found that there are 28 communities throughout the state that do not participate in the program. Although, there may be flood insurance policies offered by private companies in those areas. Check with your insurance agent to see what may be available in your ZIP Code, or reach out to the NFIP to purchase a policy directly.
